About ecoTRANSPORT

The ecoTRANSPORT Strategy is part of the Government of Canada's ambitious agenda to protect our environment and the health of Canadians and to further our economic prosperity. Initiatives announced to date include:

  • The ecoMOBILITY Program will help municipalities reduce urban passenger transportation emissions by increasing transit ridership and the use of other sustainable transportation options.

  • The ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program will involve purchasing and testing a range of advanced technologies and showcasing them at public events across Canada.

  • Transport Canada's ecoFREIGHT Program, which operated from April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2011 worked with the freight transportation industry towards a greater uptake of technologies and practices that reduce fuel consumption, criteria air contaminants and greenhouse gas emissions.

  • On March 31, 2009, the ecoAUTO Rebate Program concluded its two-year mandate to encourage Canadians to buy new fuel-efficient vehicles as part of the Government of Canada's plan to protect the environment. The program received over 182,300 applications and issued over 169,800 rebates totalling $191.2 million.

  • ecoENERGY Efficiency for Vehicles – Provides both individual Canadians and Canada’s commercial/institutional fleet sector with decision-making tools for buying and operating their vehicles to reduce fuel consumption. It also promotes vehicle efficiency by introducing improved vehicle fuel consumption labels and a light-duty tire information system.
