Air quality and climate change

Canada's Action on Climate Change - Climate change is one of the most important environmental issues of our time, requiring urgent action on the part of all governments and citizens. The Government of Canada remains committed to contributing to the global effort by taking action to reduce Canada's total greenhouse gas emissions by 17 % from 2005 levels by 2020.

Biofuels (Renewable Fuels)

The Government's comprehensive strategy for renewable fuels has four components: increasing the retail availability of renewable fuels through regulation; supporting the expansion of Canadian production of renewable fuels; assisting farmers to seize new opportunities in this sector; and accelerating the commercialization of new technologies.

ecoENERGY for Biofuels – The initiative will provide operating incentives to producers of renewable alternatives to gasoline and diesel based on production levels and other factors. It will make investment in production facilities more attractive by partially offsetting the risk associated with fluctuating feedstock and fuel prices.

Buildings

ecoENERGY Efficiency for Buildings – This program provides information and benchmarking tools to improve building energy performance of new and existing buildings.

Chemical Substances

The Government of Canada assesses and controls chemical substances to protect human health and the environment using a variety of tools. These range from providing information about proper use and disposal, to regulations that restrict or prohibit use.  Canada's new Chemicals Management Plan takes immediate action to regulate chemicals that are harmful to human health or the environment.

Equipment Standards and Labelling

ecoENERGY Efficiency for Equipment Standards and Labelling- Introduces or raises energy efficiency standards for a wide range of products, and promotes energy-efficient products through the ENERGY STAR program.

Housing

ecoENERGY Efficiency for Housing - Encourages the construction and retrofit of low-rise residential housing, making the new and existing stock more energy-efficient.

ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes - The Government of Canada has renewed the popular ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program. From June 6, 2011, until March 31, 2012, owners of most houses, four-season recreational properties and low-rise multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) can register to be eligible.

Industry

ecoENERGY Efficiency for Industry - Aids the adoption of an Energy Management Standard, accelerates energy-saving investments in factories and supports the exchange of best-practices information within Canada’s industrial sector.

Renewable Heat and Power

ecoENERGY for Aboriginal and Northern Communities – This program supported the development of clean energy projects and encouraged communities to adopt alternative energy sources to reduce dependence on diesel fuel.

ecoENERGY for Renewable Heat – Provides incentives for solar water and air installations in the industrial, commercial and institutional sectors; helps develop renewable thermal energy industry capacity; and contributes to clean air by displacing fossil fuel-based energy use for space heating and cooling and water heating. ecoENERGY for Renewable Heat has ended as of March 31, 2011.

ecoENERGY for Renewable Power – Increases supply of clean electricity from low-impact renewable sources such as wind, biomass, hydro, geothermal, solar photovoltaic and ocean energy through a production incentive of one cent per kilowatt-hour over ten years on eligible projects.

Sustainable Communities

EQuilibrium™ Communities Initiative – The EQuilibrium Communities Initiative will provide financial, technical and promotional assistance to sustainable community projects chosen through a national competition. It will showcase the talents and innovation of Canadian residential developers, planners, designers and municipalities. The initiative is being led and funded equally by Natural Resources Canada and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The selection process for the EQuilibrium™ Communities Initiative projects and funding has been completed.

ecoENERGY for Aboriginal and Northern Communities –This program supported the development of clean energy projects and encouraged communities to adopt alternative energy sources to reduce dependence on diesel fuel.

Technology and Innovation

ecoENERGY Innovation – The ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative received $97 million in funding in Budget. The program’s objective is to support energy technology innovation to produce and use energy in a more clean and efficient way.

Transportation

ecoENERGY Efficiency for Vehicles –  Provides both individual Canadians and Canada’s commercial/institutional fleet sector with decision-making tools for buying and operating their vehicles to reduce fuel consumption. It also promotes vehicle efficiency by introducing improved vehicle fuel consumption labels and a light-duty tire information system.

The ecoFREIGHT Program is aimed at reducing the environmental and health effects of freight transportation through the use of technology. The program has six initiatives: National Harmonization Initiative for the Trucking Industry, ecoENERGY for Fleets, Freight Technology Demonstration Fund, Freight Technology Incentive Program, ecoFREIGHT Partnerships and the Marine Shore Power program.

The ecoMOBILITY Program will help municipalities reduce urban passenger transportation emissions by increasing transit ridership and the use of other sustainable transportation options.

The ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program will involve purchasing and testing a range of advanced technologies and showcasing them at public events across Canada.
