Canada's New Government announces targets to tackle climate change and reduce air pollution
Backgrounder

Federal Provincial Relations for Actions on Industrial Air Emissions

The Government recognizes the significant actions provinces and territories are taking to promote clean air and address climate change. In fall 2006, consultations were undertaken with provinces and territories as the Government developed the Regulatory Framework for Industrial Air Emissions.

We will continue to work in partnership with provinces and territories to promote approaches that avoid unnecessary duplication of effort so that we get the maximum amount of environmental benefits with the least amount of administrative and cost burden for industry.

For example, the Government will seek to enter into “equivalency agreements” with provinces and territories to harmonize our regulatory approach and reduce red tape.

We also announced a $1.5 billion trust fund for clean air and climate change to support provinces and territories to develop technology, energy efficiencies and other projects that will provide real results on reducing greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions. This amount has been divided as follows amongst provinces and territories:

  • Alberta: $159.9M
  • British Columbia: $199.3M
  • Manitoba: $53.8M
  • New Brunswick: $34M
  • Newfoundland and Labrador: $23M
  • Northwest Territories: $5M
  • Nova Scotia: $42.5M
  • Nunavut: $5M
  • Ontario: $586.2M
  • Prince Edward Island: $15M
  • Quebec: $349.9M
  • Saskatchewan: $44.4M
  • Yukon: $5M

Climate change and air pollution are serious problems for all Canadians and they require both federal and provincial leadership.
