The Yukon Conservation Society (YCS) was formed to promote the conservation ethic in the Yukon and across the North. Its mandate is to encourage the conservation of Yukon wilderness, wildlife and natural resources. It serves the Yukon public through education, research and advocacy work on diverse environmental issues. The YCS has received funding for two projects through SINED's Innovation and Knowledge Fund and for one project through SINED's Targeted Investment Program.
Two projects funded through the Innovation and Knowledge Fund:
Yukon Carbon Fund
The YCS received $25,485 in 2008/09 for a Yukon Carbon Fund feasibility study. A Yukon Carbon Fund would support efforts to reduce climate change and provide local training, infrastructure development, business development and employment in economic sectors that help mitigate climate change.
The Magical Thread
The YCS received $147,000 over two years (2007/08, 2008/09) to develop The Magical Thread. Formerly called Stories for Change, it is an online and DVD storybook for children in grades one through five that links the school curriculum with local First Nations and Yukon-specific information. This project will develop awareness and appreciation for the Yukon's unique environment and culture.
One project funded through the Targeted Investment Program:
Economic and business assessment of a potential ecological reserve at Lewes River
The YCS received $14,877 in 2008/09 toward a feasibility study for the development of an Ecological Reserve Management Plan for a Lewes River property. It is a project to assess the economic and business potential of a property on Lewes River that is being offered to the YCS as a donation. If created, an ecological reserve could have a positive impact on tourism, education and the environment in the territory through the promotion of eco-tourism and eco-friendly hospitality, as well as providing funding for the YCS' conservation activities.
