A total of approximately $500,000 in federal contributions will be allocated to twelve projects in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta through Round 30 of the federal ecoACTION Community Funding Program.
In Manitoba, ecoACTION is investing $129,798 to three separate projects:
1. Training Master Composters in Immigrant Communities: Resource Conservation Manitoba will train 14 volunteers from Winnipeg's immigrant communities to become Master Composters. Participants will commit to providing 30 hours of community composting outreach, delivering presentations, staffing displays, writing articles community newspapers, or assisting with setting up community composting bins. Throughout the project, the group will track organic wastes that are diverted from the solid waste stream through composting.

2. Growing Together: The City of Winnipeg's West Broadway Development Corporation will assist local residents with environmental sustainability. The project's four components include sustainable management of the neighbourhood's community gardens; urban agricultural training for management of an urban farm; pre-development of a natural play space for West Broadway youth; and a residential campaign to compost kitchen and yard waste.

3. Manitoba Chimney Swift Initiative - Phase II: The Manitoba Naturalists Society will conduct the second phase of a project to better understand and improve the local nesting conditions for Manitoba Chimney Swifts. There are four elements to the project, including the provision of resources and activities for public and private outreach on the Chimney Swift; collection of nesting data and video monitoring of nest sites; construction of nesting towers, and encouraging home and business owners to uncap and refurbish older chimneys to restore nesting habitats.
